There is Always Hope

“There is something very wrong.” This is what the doctor said to me on the phone days after an annual visit. “Your tests results are unusual, so I consulted with… Well, with someone much smarter than I am. You could be in danger and you need to have a brain scan as soon as possible.”

I hung up the phone in a daze and stared at the people I loved who had gathered around my dining room table for our weekly meal. Brain scan? Danger? What did that mean? I had no idea in that moment that this phone call would forever change my life.

That call took place in 2003. At that time in my life, I hosted a weekly dinner on Thursday nights for close friends and family. The people that showed up week after week were part of the fabric of my life. Over hodge-podge meals, we shared triumphs, laughter, heart ache and the daily-ness of life. I am grateful that after I hung up with the doctor close friends were there to absorb the initial shock and help me figure out next steps. Steps that would lead me to diagnosis, treatment and, eventually, a complete shift in how I view the body-mind connection and our ability to heal.

Beginning in the early ‘90’s, I had experienced increasingly debilitating symptoms. As a teenager and young woman, I was tired down to my bones and had to sleep several times a day. I had extreme thirst that could not be relieved and could never be far from a bathroom. I had intense headaches and caught every illness that passed through the seasons. Through the years, I received a number of diagnosis: mitral valve prolapse, Epstein Barr Syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, depression. Mostly, doctors shrugged their shoulders at my experience and suggested it was in my head. While not always helpful, that conclusion was true in more ways than one.

After that Thursday night phone call, a series of brain imagining and blood tests revealed that I had a tumor on my pituitary gland. The pressure of the tumor inhibited the hormone vasopressin, and I was diagnosed with Central Diabetes Insipidus. The good news was that the tumor was benign, but I faced lifelong medication and monitoring the tumor for growth and the dangers that posed.

I began medication, did brain scans and discussed the possibility of surgery as it grew. Yet, with great frustration, I experienced worse side effects from medication than the original symptoms. As I advocated for myself, I heard over and over that what I experienced “just didn’t happen on medication.” In other words, I was told it was “all in my head.” I knew my body and I chose to trust that as the other symptoms weren’t my imagination, neither was the difficulty I was having on the medication. Against the advice of my doctor, I stopped the medication and managed my symptoms and life as I always had. I had little hope of feeling better and scheduled my life around naps, water and a compromised immune system.

It would be another two years before I discovered my path to healing. I will reveal next month the miraculous changes that occurred in my mind, soul and body as the symptoms left and my body healed itself. I was led to absolute freedom from physical suffering and, in the process, healed deep and emotional wounds that had hindered me in so many ways. I am excited to share the rest of the journey with you and want to say, if you have lost hope that there is an answer, do not give up ground! There is always a path of healing for each of us whether at the physical, emotional, mental or spiritual level.
