Motivational Interviewing

What is Motivational Interviewing?

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a method for exploring how to create meaningful, self-initiated change toward thoughts, actions, and ways of being that are in line with your vision of your best self. There are a few important components of MI.

Collaboration is paramount to creating change. Together, you and I work as a team to explore behaviors that are of concern to you, examine past and current barriers to change, and create solutions for sustaining meaningful change.

Curiosity is a key element in MI. Iā€™m not an expert of your experience, so a curious approach is used to look at the many facets of behavior and desire for change. Together, we practice a non-judgmental and open attitude toward what is working and what is not working to help you identify steps to move toward transformational choices.

MI helps you identify your own strengths and successes and can improve your awareness that every choice has meaning and potential for contributing to change, empowering you in your daily life.

When working in the context of MI, I respect your autonomy and agency and encourage that in all aspects of your treatment.

Why I Use It

I incorporate MI because it is rooted in respect, compassion, and personal strength. Believing in the potential we all possess can make it easier to examine behaviors such as substance use, binge-eating behaviors, and other experiences that feel hard to control. Utilizing MI finds ways to know and appreciate ourselves, while minimizing judgment and self loathing. This creates space for true relief where change can happen. Through this compassionate approach, I have faced addictive patterns in my life and worked to bring compassion and empowerment to my choices as I continue to heal, grow, and become the best version of myself.

How it Helps

I want people to be in a healthy and empowering relationship with themselves. When we limit arguing about right and wrong choices, we are free to challenge beliefs about powerlessness, helplessness, and hopelessness. Then, we can find ways to connect with insight, motivation, and energy for you to heal, grow, and become the best version of yourself.

MI is not a scripted approach to navigating change. It accommodates your unique needs and circumstances. This takes time and presence which leads to long-lasting and meaningful results.
